How does waste separation work at school?
If you want to reduce litter on the schoolyard and in the cafeteria, and promote waste separation but are unsure of the process, Knapzak Benelux is the right place for you. As a school, you deal with various waste streams and a large group of people producing waste. How do you ensure that all that waste ends up in the right place, and how do you make students and staff aware of litter and its consequences?
To solve the waste problem in schools, Knapzak Benelux provides customized waste systems. We offer waste separation products for both indoor and outdoor use, in various types and sizes, catering to the collection of diverse waste streams.
1. Identify your waste streams and goals
The first step is to identify which waste streams you want to separate. In schools, paper/cardboard, PMD (plastic, metal, and drink cartons), general waste, and organic waste (GFT) are the most common waste streams. Knowing which waste streams to separate in specific locations makes it easier to choose the right waste bins. Also, consider why you want to separate waste; whether it's for cost savings, promoting reuse, societal responsibility, or teaching staff and students to be mindful of waste.
2. Choose your collection tools and locations
The next step is determining where the waste bins will be placed. Choose locations where many people gather or where a lot of waste is generated, such as the cafeteria, hallways, the schoolyard, and next to vending machines and printers. Then, select the most suitable waste bins. Knapzak Benelux offers a wide range of collection tools for indoor and outdoor use to facilitate easy and efficient waste separation in schools.
A commonly used waste bin in schools is the Waste Watcher. It is designed for collecting various types of waste streams and comes in three different sizes: 60 liters, 87 liters, and 121 liters. The type of waste you collect depends on the lid you use, for example, a blue lid for paper, a yellow lid for PMD, and a black lid for general waste. By connecting multiple Waste Watchers with a connector, you can create your own waste station. This waste bin, intended for indoor use, is ideal for cafeterias, hallways, and classrooms! Did you know that these bins can be fully personalized to match your taste or brand identity?
We also have a suitable waste bin for the collection of confidential documents, called the Shredintor. This bin is available in 60 liters and 87 liters. With a lockable lid, your collected documents are always secure!
In addition, our eye-catching waste bins from the MAN series are already present throughout the Netherlands in primary schools, high schools, universities, etc. The bins in this series, including PETman, CANman, CUPman, and TRASHman, make waste separation a bit more enjoyable. And the more enjoyable something is, the more likely people are to do it! These four bins stand out more than regular trash cans, making people more inclined to dispose of their waste in them.
In the giant PET bottle PETman, you can toss your plastic bottle. This bin, available in the colors orange, blue, yellow, black, and white, can hold 250 to 300 bottles of 0.5 liters. CANman is suitable for 200 to 300 aluminum cans. In CUPman, you can deposit 800 to 1000 cardboard cups, and TRASHman is meant for general waste.
3. Use clear signage
Use colors, icons, and shapes to make waste separation a success at your school. By associating these elements with specific waste streams, students and staff can quickly identify the bin for disposing of their waste. The result is a clear separation of waste streams and less residual waste.
Knapzak Benelux provides various accessories that clearly indicate which waste streams are intended for the bins. We have eye-catching lids, information boards, and stickers for the Waste Watcher and Shredinator. For the fun bins from the MAN series, we also have cool standard wraps for the bins that, in addition to the shape of the bins, clearly indicate the type of waste that belongs in them. For example, the PETman wrap features various small plastic bottles. You also have the option to personalize the wrap with your logo, a fitting slogan, or an image of your choice!
4. Awareness among students and staff
We strive for a world without litter, and that's why we consider it essential to raise awareness of waste separation and its importance at a young age. Creating awareness among people builds support.
As a school, participate in clean-up days like World Cleanup Day and Waste Heroes Week, and let students, students, and staff help make the environment litter-free. Or set a good example and organize a cleaning initiative!
